THE KIRKLAND BULLET®

The The Kirkland Bullet® is a fixation device used to attach navigation trackers to bone. It can be used as a unicortical or bicortical device.

The tapered tip of the trochar bores through the near cortex slowly. As the treads engage the cortical bone, the surgeon gently allows the threads to pull the pin to but not through the distant cortex. As the threaded portion engages the cortex, the pin is pulled at its own speed to the distant cortex. It is important to stop turning the pin before it reaches the distant cortex. The hand-held wrench can then be used to advance the bullet to, but not through the distant cortex. The outer sleeve is then tightened gently against the near cortex. The outer sleeve adds stiffness and controls rotation.

Since the pin is not an internal fixation device, there is no need to over tighten the device. Care should be used to avoid stripping the near cortex. Should this happen, simply drive the pin through the distant cortex and use the available wrenches to secure the outer sleeve.
